Christian Psephogynism
(Christian Psephogynism) "The Old Covenant may have upheld male headship but the New Covenant teaches equality between the sexes. The male headship it promotes is voluntary and consensual."
"Patriarchy (male dominance) is not a biblical ideal but a result of sin. Patriarchy is an abuse of power, taking from females what God has given them, their dignity, and freedom, their leadership, and often their very lives."
Christians For Biblical Equality, Core Values, c.1988. (For present purposes their "Patriarchy" is equivalent to Androcracy.)
The Bible as a whole teaches Androcratism. Note the following passages.
"In the image of God he created him. Male and female he created them."
Genesis 1.27. Only the man is called the image of God. The statement about the sexes is open to interpretation.
"I will make him a helper fit for him. ... They become one flesh. ... From the beginning it was [so]."
Genesis 2.18, 24; Matthew 19.8.
"A good wife who can find? ... The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. ... Her husband is known in the gates. ... Give her of the fruit of her hands."
Proverbs 31.10-31. This song of praise to the best of women still implies unlimited male headship, albeit the woman is given much scope for initiative. The fruit of her hands is not hers until given to her.
"The head of every man is Christ, the head of a woman is her man. ... Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man."
1st Corinthians 11.3, 8.
"Nature itself teaches you ...."
1st Corinthians 11.14. These words are unduly neglected. They suggest a general principle, and should warn us against identifying nature (fusis), which is good, with flesh (sarx), which the New Covenent Book sometimes uses as a summary of evil.
"Women ... are not permitted to speak, but should be subordinate."
1st Corinthians 14.34.
"... the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named ..." ... "He has spoken to us by a son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world."
Ephesians 3.14-15; Hebrews 1.2. These point us to gender asymmetry as part of God's creation plan.
"As the ekklesia is subject to Christ, so let women also be subject in everything to their men. Men, ... let each one of you help his woman as himself, and let the woman see that she fears her man."
Ephesians 5.24-25, 33 (likewise Colossians 3.18-19; Titus 2.3-5). Yes, "fear" (fobetai)!
"Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness. I permit no woman to teach or have authority over men. ... For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor."
1st Timothy 2.11-14. Not that woman is more guilty than man; on the contrary, if it is literally true that Adam's first choice preceded Eve's then the earliest choice affected by the Defection must have been made by Adam. So what is the point of this passage? Probably that Adam failed to guide Eve, leading to the overt defection of which Genesis speaks.
Likewise women are not primarily to blame for Psephogynism; they are victims of men's abdication.
"You women be submissive to your men, so that some, though they do not obey the word, may be won without a word ... when they see your reverent and chaste behaviour. ... Let not yours be the outward adorning ... but let it be ... the imperishable jewel of a gentle and quiet spirit. ... So once the holy women ... used to adorn themselves and were submissive to their men."
1st Peter 3.1-7. Some hints here, I think, about female manners.
Christian Psephogynism seems to have cropped up very early in Christian history, but was quickly suppressed, and not revived until modern times.
Christians sometimes cloak their Psephogynism, for instance by claiming to support "male headship" while endorsing "votes for women".
